Prenatal Singing is the missing piece of birth preparation.

The first sense that we develop in our mother’s womb is hearing. Through this sense we experience a symphony of our mother’s heartbeat, her breath, her voice and the sounds of the waters that surround us. We experience our mother’s voice in the deepest way when she sings - the harmonies, the tones, the vibrations are amplified in the waters of the womb. These vocal sounds may be our first awareness that a world lay out before us outside of our mother’s womb.

Prenatal singing is an act that supports the development of the baby and the emotional, mental and physical states of the mother. Prenatal singing is something that is carried with women throughout the pregnancy, during the birth and beyond. Prenatal singing is an offering, subject, and field of research was developed in the 1970’s by Marie Louise Aucher, a classically trained singer who founded the Psychophonie way of singing, but we have been singing during pregnancy and childbirth for thousands of years. Singing is nourishing to our bodies, our minds and our hearts. We sing to connect, singing helps us to process emotions - joy, sadness, pain, praise. We sing to birth our babies into the world and sing the songs of soothing and healing.

About Me & Prenatal Singing Work

Hello! I’m Kendy, mother, holistic vocal teacher, certified doula, founder of Open Voice and musical artist. It is my passion to empower people through their voices and teach people how to use their voice for nourishment, balance and overall wellness.

Singing in pregnancy and birth is as old as humanity itself, but as with most things we have forgotten the potent tool that is our voice. How wonderful to live during a time that we begin to remember that we have so much power within ourselves!

My first birth was in 2018 and I spent my pregnancy focusing my singing practice on connection with my baby, the power within me and to prepare for my birth. I used my voice in both of my births and it was a way to seek comfort and find strength.

After my first birth, I became a doula and began to research prenatal singing and the effects of singing during pregnancy and birth. I spent hours reading through research papers and finding others who were offering trainings and classes. I found that prenatal singing is well known throughout France and a handful of people are teaching it in the United States and the rest of Europe, definitely not enough!

I have been teaching prenatal singing groups and individual and partner sessions for six years now. The work is always profound and it is amazing to hear from mother’s who used these vocal techniques during birth. It is now time for more facilitators to be trained to share this amazing practice to support pregnancy, birth and postpartum. This work is my passion and I’m so excited to give you the tools to successfully create and share your own courses and workshops.

‘I usually claim that pregnant women should not read books about pregnancy and birth. Their time is too precious. They should, rather, watch the moon and sing to their baby in the womb.’
